Privacy policy
How What’s the Word handles account, location, social, media, safety, and subscription information.
Information you provide
We process account and profile details such as email address, display name, username, biography, interests, profile images, self-declared birth date, and privacy choices. We also process the plans, posts, messages, photos, videos, reports, ratings, and other content you choose to submit.
Location and event privacy
Nearby discovery uses a city, broad area, or foreground device location when you request it. We do not provide a live friend map or continuously publish precise device location. Exact private-event locations are stored separately and are available only to authorized hosts and approved attendees during the allowed reveal window.
Social, reputation, and safety data
We process follows, attendance relationships, blocks, reports, moderation decisions, and eligibility signals so the community can function safely. Upload checks cover supported file types and size. You can report content for review by authorized moderators. A viewable profile can show its level, stage, total XP, and progress toward the next level. Detailed progression activity remains private.
Street Cred rating privacy
New Street Cred scores, dates, and optional public comments are visible to signed-in people who can view the recipient’s profile, with the author shown as Anonymous User. Existing private notes are never published. Premium members can see who rated them: your name and profile can appear in the recipient’s private rating history if they have or later get Premium. Other viewers will not see who submitted the rating. Blocking and account restrictions still apply. Private notes, safety details, and the connection or event used to qualify a rating are not shared with recipients or other viewers.
Word posts and Memories
Word posts can include photos or videos and use the audience you choose: Everyone, Followers, or Friends. Everyone can include people who do not follow you. Blocking and any linked event’s access restrictions still apply. Memories are photo posts shared only at your request and after any required approval, with the same three audience choices. Everyone Memories require a public profile and a public event. Age, blocking, and applicable event-access rules still apply.
Event album audiences
Album photos and videos are available to their uploader and event managers, and to authorized event participants after required approval. Event cover photos follow the event’s visibility. Media in a published recap can also reach the event’s audience when that recap uses event-audience visibility. A photo explicitly shared as a Memory follows its selected Memory audience.
Photo and video metadata
The app re-encodes selected photos before upload to reduce accidental disclosure of embedded location and device metadata. Videos may retain source metadata, so review a video before posting it. Audience controls cannot prevent someone who can view your content from saving or sharing a copy.
Payments
Apple or Google processes subscription payment details. RevenueCat helps us determine whether the What’s the Word Pro entitlement is active. We receive product, entitlement, renewal, and transaction-status information, but not your full card number.
How information is used
We use information to authenticate accounts; display profiles and plans; run discovery, messaging, Memories, Street Cred, and progression; protect private locations; provide support; prevent abuse; moderate content; fulfill account requests; and maintain subscription access. We do not sell personal information or use third-party behavioral advertising in the current app.
Service providers and legal requests
We use Supabase for accounts, databases, and media storage; Expo for app delivery, updates, and push notifications; Resend for account email; RevenueCat and the device app store for subscriptions; Apple or Google for maps and platform services; and Cloudflare for security challenges when enabled. These providers process data needed for their services. We may also disclose information for safety, fraud prevention, legal compliance, or protection of rights.
Retention, export, and deletion
We retain account information while an account is active and keep records only as long as needed for the service, safety, dispute handling, fraud prevention, and legal obligations. You can request a data export or start account deletion in Account & data. Deletion removes or de-identifies account content unless a limited record must be retained for a lawful reason; provider backups follow the provider’s retention schedule.
Deletion confirmation email
When account deletion is processed, we temporarily keep your verified email address to send a completion confirmation. This copy is removed after our email provider accepts the message, or when the delivery window expires, no later than seven days after completion plus the scheduled cleanup interval. A de-identified delivery status remains briefly for troubleshooting. Deleting your account does not cancel an Apple or Google subscription.
Your choices
You can edit profile visibility and location disclosure, unfollow or block people, unshare Memories, remove eligible content, manage notifications and subscriptions, request an export, and initiate account deletion. Contact Support about access, correction, deletion, moderation, or an appeal.
Age
The service is for people age 13 or older and is not intended for children under 13. Birth dates are entered by users for age eligibility, not independent age or identity verification. Plans marked 18+ or 21+ retain those restrictions. Contact Support if you believe someone under 13 has an account so we can investigate and restrict or remove the account and its data as appropriate.
Security and changes
We use access controls and server authorization, including private storage and expiring links for audience-limited media. These controls do not make publicly shared content private. No system is perfectly secure. We may update this notice as the service changes and will post the revised date and provide additional notice when required.
